The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday paraded five suspects arrested in connection with the robbery of one Wilson Obande Onazi who is the  father of Super Eagles player, Ogenyi Onazi, on Monday,   They were arrested at Shobiri Hotel, Ajangbadi area of the state at about 7pm on Wednesday Sept. 14, while they were trying to dispose of the Toyota Highlander SUV with Reg. Meranti, the third most violent typhoon on record, brings strong winds and rain to coastal cities as Taiwan cleans up. Super Typhoon Meranti has made landfall in southeastern China, bringing strong winds and rain in what state media has called the strongest storm of the year globally. The typhoon arrived in the early hours of Thursday near the major city of Xiamen after sweeping through southern Taiwan on Wednesday and killing one person. Pictures on state media showed flooded streets in some parts of the province of Fujian, where Xiamen is located, fallen trees and crushed cars. Xinhua news agency said it was the strongest typhoon to hit that part of the country since the founding of Communist China in 1949 and the strongest so far this year anywhere in the world. In some parts of Xiamen, including both urban and rural areas, power supplies had been cut off, it said. Collision kills at least six people and injures more than 150, highlighting problems plaguing country's railway network. A Karachi-bound express train has collided with a stationary freight train in Pakistan's central Punjab region, killing at least six people and injuring more than 150, according to Geo TV. The accident occurred about 25km from the city of Multan around 2:30am local time on Thursday when the passenger train named Awami Express crashed into a goods train which had stopped after running over a man crossing the railway track. TV footage showed rescue officials working around crumpled and overturned carriages in the darkness. The European Commission wants free wi-fi to be provided in public spaces across its member states within four years. The goal was announced by the president of the European Union's executive body, Jean-Claude Juncker, in his  annual state of the union address . He also wants at least one city in each EU country to have deployed a 5G mobile network by 2020. However, one expert cast doubt over whether the public would benefit. European officials have struggled to deliver an earlier promise to abolish mobile roaming fees.

Reports from Syria say the cessation of hostilities that came into effect on Monday appears to be holding. The deal, brokered by Russia and the US, has been described by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, as possibly the “last chance to save a united Syria”. Residents in the troubled northern city of Aleppo said there had been calm in the city. A monitoring group based in the United Kingdom, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has also confirmed that it appeared to be “quiet” on nearly all fronts. However, there were reports of sporadic attacks carried out by both government forces and rebels after the ceasefire had come into effect. The Syrian Army said the truce would be applied throughout Syria for seven days, but that it reserved the right to respond decisively to any violation by armed groups.

ISTANBUL: Turkey has made a formal request to the United States for the arrest of U.S.-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen on charges of orchestrating an attempted military coup on July 15, Turkish broadcaster NTV said on Tuesday (Sep 13). Turkey blames members of Gulen's religious movement for the failed putsch two months ago, in which rogue soldiers commandeered tanks and fighters jets, bombing parliament and seizing bridges in a bid to take over power. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan discussed the issue with U.S. President Barack Obama at the G20 summit in China earlier this month. A senior U.S. administration official said at the time that Obama had explained to Erdogan that the decision would be a legal, not a political one.

SINGAPORE: AirAsia will provide free flights to all Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Paralympians who won a medal at the 2016 Paralympic Games, the budget airline's CEO, Tony Fernandes, wrote in an Instagram post on Monday (Sep 12).
