Brewer AB Inbev to cut 5,500 jobs after SABMiller merger

The world’s top brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev will cut around 5,500 jobs after it completes its huge merger with rival SABMiller, a source with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Friday. Investor documents posted online Friday said the Belgium-based brewer of Budweiser and Stella Artois would slash about three percent of its enlarged staff over three years following the tie-up. SABMiller employs about 70,000 employees in more than 80 countries, while AB Inbev has about 150,000 staff in 26 countries, according to company figures. AB InBev is already the world’s top brewer and the SABMiller acquisition is in line to be the third largest merger in history if it goes through. A crunch vote by SABMiller shareholders to clinch the deal is set for September 28 with the companies to be officially combined on October 10. Minister beaten to death by striking workers

Bolivian miners on Thursday during a clash with the police in the town of Panduro hacked the Deputy Interior Minister to death. Interior Minister, Carlos Romero, confirmed on Friday that reports by witnesses indicated that the 55-year-old was beaten to death following clashes between police and miners in the town of Panduro, 165 kilometres south-east of La Paz. Romero said Illanes had been kidnapped by miners after attempting to initiate talks with them at a roadblock. The minister, who spoke of a “cowardly and brutal” murder, added that his aide was also injured and was taken to hospital. He said that one miner was reportedly also killed in the Thursday’s clashes, bringing the death toll in several days of protests against controversial trade union legislation to three. The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige has called on governors across the different states of the federation, to replicate the style and zeal of the Cross River State Government by creating employment opportunities for its unemployed citizens. The Minister made the call while in Calabar the State Capital, for an official engagement which saw him to the governor’s office, flagging off of the School -To-Work Scheme of the NDE as well as, an inspection of the garment factory. The Labour boss was amazed at the size and sophistication of the Calabar Garment Factory which is estimated to employ about 3,000 people. The garment factory is situated along the Goodluck Jonathan bye-pass in Calabar Metropolis with the aim of boosting direct and indirect channels for diversification of the economy which is said to be the biggest in Africa. Abia Govt. Reduces State University Fees To Train Street Hawkers

The Abia State Government in line with its transformation in the education sector has approved reduction of fees in the state owned university, as a measure to reach out to the poor and encourage indigenes  According to the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Bonnie Iwuoha, the executive council has given approval for a reduction of 10,000 Naira in the school fees payable by Abia state indigenes in the Abia state University, Uturu. The beneficiaries are however to present the tax receipts of their parents or guardians which are to be proved through biometrics. The information boss also disclosed that the Ministry of Woman Affairs is to collaborate with institutions to provide a better living condition, for those hawking on the streets by building more skill acquisition centres to train them to be self-reliant.

SIR Richard Branson thought he was going to die after being involved in a high-speed bike crash. The 66-year-old billionaire Virgin owner crashed head first during the incident on the British Virgin Islands, where he was holidaying with his two children Sam and Holly. He was rushed to hospital in Miami, Florida. Sir Richard, who is worth nearly £4billion, was left with torn ligaments and a cracked cheek, in addition to cuts and bruises. Police Post Attack: 23 Arrested Over Death Of Security Guard In Anambra

23 suspects have been arrested over the violent attack on a police by hoodlums from Abagana, a community in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State. A security guard was shot dead and four police officers were wounded during the attack. Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters, Awka, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sam Okaula, said over 200 hoodlums from Abagana, invaded neighbouring Ukpo Community in the same local government area and swooped down on a Police post, shooting and destroying properties belonging to the police. Mr. Okaula said the hoodlums were armed with explosives and dangerous weapons and carried out “an act of terrorism following the magnitude of the attack”. He said a team of Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) identified and defused an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), while still recovering another one at the scene. A  former student at Citrus Valley High School in Redlands, California who impregnated his teacher, has received 6 million dollars from his school district, the largest victim sex abuse settlements ever from a public agency. The boy who was 16 when the incident occurred, received the large sum on Friday, the 19th day of August, 2016 which is three years after the arrest of his former teacher and lover, Laura Whitehurst and as at the time he was having a sexual relationship with his female teacher Laura, he was under 18 years. According to the former student, he felt manipulated and used by Laura while he was in school, as he started having sex with her at the age of 16 in her apartment, before she gave birth to their child in June 2013 . The Imo state police command has rescued a 3-day old baby, born to the family of Mr and Mrs Oluebube Ekwedike of Umuezealaowerre Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State. 24 Hour Solar System: Ayade Signs MoU With Dubai Firm

The Cross River State government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Dubai firm, Skipper Seil, to provide a 100kva solar lighting generating system, to ensure a 24-hour supply in Calabar, the state Capital. The 100kvm solar power intervention is expected to serve as a grid for industrial zones across the 18 LGAs of the state. The partnership which both parties sealed by signing the MoU, was held at the Governor’s office in Calabar, where President of the firm, Mr. Jitender Sachdeva gave the assurance that construction work will commence in about two months. Mr Sachdeva expressed confidence in the zeal of Governor Ayade, whom he described as one of the few governors in Nigeria who are paying salaries on time and to him, sighting such a project in the state will compliment his efforts in providing good life for residents in the state. Suspended Immigration Recruits Take Protest To Aso Rock

Some suspended recruits of the Nigeria Immigration Service on Friday staged a protest march at the presidency to complain about what they said was an att empt to rob them of their jobs. They are asking the immigration service to reinstate them in the spirit of justice. At the Aso Rock, the protesters, however, could not go beyond a barricade mounted by the Nigeria Police Force. Representatives of the 2,000 recruits suspended by the Nigeria Immigration Service said that their patience was running out. They alleged that the immigration authorities had since replaced their names with those of the children of the high and mighty in the society. The spokesperson for the group, Aisha Yesufu, outlined their demands. She said they had received three months training including handling of weapons and would rather serve their country than take to crime. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has successfully reconfigured another alpha jet for combat role.   The Air Force stated that the achievement followed relentless efforts by the NAF Technical Response Team (TRT). It says the latest conversion makes it the third alpha jet to be reconfigured under the leadership of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. The alpha jet has been reconfigured to carry both rockets and bombs during combat missions.
